Get a Better Work-Life Balance, Improve Efficiency!

In today’s world of smartphones and tablets, it’s easy to find yourself falling into the pattern of being on call and available all the time. Your phone pings you, and you feel obliged to respond at once- regardless of what time it is! Moreover, global offices have dissolved time boundaries, as very often we are required to interact with colleagues overseas in their time zone.

But just because it is possible for us to be on call all the time, doesn’t mean we should choose to be- as it’s not necessarily a good thing. We all need time and space to rewire ourselves and recharge our batteries- and this is what having a good work-life balance entails. Taking time out for oneself, spending time with the family or friends, or simply relaxing will actually help enhance productivity.

Studies have shown that when employees work just five days a week, they often work faster and with more efficiency than those that work six days or seven days a week. When the brain and body are fatigued, mistakes start to creep in. Again, taking a holiday lowers stress levels and refreshes thinking capabilities. But remember- while going on vacation, don’t pack the office into your suitcase as well! Leave your office behind; it doesn’t make for a good holiday companion!

Try, for your own sake, not to blur the lines between after work hours – when you should be away from your computer and smartphone – and actual work time. Ignore those pings and messages when you’re away from work. This is especially important for those who work from home, and the numbers of such employees are increasing day by day.

Slow down to the pace of life. Spend time out savouring all that life has to offer. And your work productivity will surely look up as well!
