Help save a life on world blood donor day

Safe blood supplies are a scarce commodity, especially in developing countries. World Blood Donor Day is an occasion to raise awareness of the problem and thank donors worldwide. It is held annually on June 14.

Despite about 92 million yearly blood donations worldwide, safe blood is constantly in high demand, especially in developing countries.

World Blood Donor Day falls on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner (first distinguished the main blood groups). He created the ABO blood group system, which is still used today to ensure the safety of blood transfusions.

The history of blood donation goes back further than you might expect, reaching as far back as the 17th century. The medical specialists of the time knew that blood was a vital element in the body and losing too much of it was bound to have tragic consequences on the patient. Blood Donors save lives every day by giving of themselves so that accident victims and those in need of transfusions for surgeries can live.

This year’s theme “Blood connects us all“, focuses on thanking blood donors and highlights the dimension of “sharing” and “connection” between blood donors and patients.

The slogan “Share life, give blood” has been adopted to draw attention to the roles that voluntary donation systems play in encouraging people to care for one another and promote community cohesion and participation towards a healthier society.

Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and child care.

Have a big heart…. Give blood.
