A communication sent out after the meeting of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia on the 19th December 2013 gives out the following important information pertaining to new Professional standards for nurses and midwives practising in Australia.

This meeting was held at the AHPRA National Office in Melbourne, Victoria.

The National Board is looking to publish new and revised registration standards and professional codes and guidelines in 2014.

The first three documents to be published in February 2014 will be the

• Revised Mandatory reporting guidelines, and
• A new Social Media Policy

These guidelines and policy will come into effect in March 2014 and all nurses and midwives will need to meet the new requirements. Additional information will also be published in February 2014 explaining the similarities and differences between the current and new guidelines.

It is important that nurses and midwives understand these revised and new documents and make changes to their current approach to practice where necessary, for example , in relation to advertising.
